Tuck in

Some say life is too short to drink bad wine. Café Cru, an all-day eatery in Montecasino’s Pivot precinct, aims to help you make the most of your time on Earth with a carefully curated selection of wines bought on auction, paired with a generous menu of sumptuous eats and vibey on-trend decor. Savour an unhurried meal at Café Cru when you take your pick from the seating inside the popular deli, coffee and wine shop, or perhaps watch passers-by from a table in the outside courtyard. Open at 7 am from Monday to Friday, just in time to feed the breakfast crowd, start your day with a hearty jaffle, flavourful quiche or eggs done to your liking; or opt for the healthier option with a choice of tasty smoothies. Arrive hungry for a lunch of crusty bread with pickles, mustard and bratwurst, a roast chicken and vegetable pie, or Durban-style lamb curry. Vegetarians will be delighted with the Mediterranean platter or a nibble from the inventive cheeseboard (which provides a great opportunity to sample the variety of wares from local cheesemakers). Pop in before the cafe closes at 5 pm and you will likely be tempted to indulge in a freshly baked treat and coffee.

Drink up

Aside from a menu of artisan spirits, craft beers and ciders, Café Cru easily exceeds all expectations with its superb wine list. As one of Tsogo Sun’s participating properties, Café Cru offers a full selection of wine bought at the prestigious Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Auction (auctioning rare wines produced by some of SA’s leading winemakers) and the Nederburg Auction (an invitation-only event and one of the world’s five major wine auctions). Representing the best wine producers in the country, Café Cru’s sought-after auction wines are unique to Joburg. Carefully selected by Group Sommelier Miguel Chan for their easy pairing with a variety of dishes, savour your chosen vintage on the cafe’s premises or drink it at home at your leisure (wines sold at Café Cru are, on average, less than retail prices). With its spacious and inviting interior, Café Cru is an ideal venue to host regular wine events and tastings.

Every month a new winery is featured with a five-wine tasting, or pop by on the last Wednesday of the month for a casual couch session with a prominent winemaker – a fun and novel experience of good conversation, combined with tasty finger foods. And, on the final Sunday of the month from 9 am to 3 pm, the whole family is welcome at Café Cru. A play area will keep the little ones amused, while parents are free to get stuck right into a day of wine tasting, a cooking demo, craft beers on tap and live music.
