Spice of life

Silver lining

No visit to Silverstar Casino would be complete without enjoying a meal at the newly opened Aarya. The second restaurant of the same name,
headed up by the first winner of MasterChef South Africa, Deena Naidoo.

Aarya is located on the Outdoor Square. Its interior is contemporary, yet still comfortable, in warm shades of red, with black-and-white photography adorning the rustic brick walls. The vibe is lively, the service efficient.

Spoilt for choice

The menu is inspired by our rainbow nation, bringing together people from diverse cultures through tasty, innovative food. For starters, the grilled-prawn salad will tempt seafood lovers. Think chilli prawns resting on a bed of mixed leaves piled with vine tomatoes, cucumber,
spring onions, peppadews and feta – all of it drizzled with a delicious deglazed balsamic vinegar dressing.

When it comes to main courses, Indian-style curries feature strongly, thanks to Chef Deena’s knowledge of spices. His signature, award-winning butter chicken – fillets simmered in an exotic blend of spices and butter cream, served with your choice of fresh naan or fluffy basmati rice – is an absolute must. Other winners include lamb chops marinated in red chilli and ginger paste, grilled then simmered in a tomato, green pepper and onion gravy; or the coal-fire chicken tikka, which is rubbed in tikka spice and roasted over hot tandoori coals.

If you aren’t in the mood for something spicy, there are plenty of comfort-food favourites to satisfy your tastes, including the linefish of the day served on a bed of baby potatoes with lemon-butter sauce; or slow-cooked Karoo lamb shank smothered in a red-wine and rosemary jus with mash and cinnamon butternut; or maybe consider merging your love of spicy and comfort foods with the ultimate indulgence – Aarya butter-chicken pizza!

Speaking of indulging, the gourmet milkshakes simply cannot go unmentioned. The Nutella chocolate, strawberries and cream, or salted caramel flavours won’t disappoint. Nor will the selection of desserts on offer, such as kulfi (Indian ice cream), chocolate mud pie with a dash of Turkish delight, fudge Picasso with chunks of fudge and Cape Velvet liqueur, and crème brûlée. Need we say more?
