Each year Tsogo Sun acquires a selection of the finest wines at some of the country’s most noted auctions. These wines, secured predominantly at Nederburg Auction (one of the world’s five major wine auctions) and the annual event held by the Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild (an invitat ion-only association of 46 of the top winemakers in the Cape) are available at a number of Tsogo Sun dining venues.

‘We choose wines first and foremost on their intrinsic qualities, which must be comparable to benchmarks from around the world,’ explains Group Sommelier Miguel Chan. ‘The wines should be vibrant with clear ripe fruit expressions, but also delicate enough to pair with a broad variety of dishes, due to the diversity of our restaurants.’

This year, Chan is particularly excited to have secured bottles of a rare offering of the Mullineux and Leeu The Gris Sémillon, made from the produce of 56-year-old vineyards by Mullineux and Leeu Family Wines – one of the Swartland and South Africa’s most acclaimed wineries.

A full selection of these fantastic auction wines is available to be enjoyed at Montecasino’s Cafe Cru and Jenda Food & Wine restaurants.

This vibey, urban space in the Pivot precinct is a wine lover’s dream. A deli and a home for wine enthusiasts, Cafe Cru’s aim is to offer great wines at below retail prices – either to be enjoyed on-site or for collectors to include in their personal cellars.

Aside from the full selection of auction wines, Cafe Cru also showcases a different winery every month, highlighting their top wines in various styles.

For cheese lovers, yummy ‘local is lekker’ cheese-and-wine tastings are provided, with an emphasis on the diversity of artisanal cheesemakers in and around Gauteng.

Some of the recommended pairings include goat’s milk cheese with Sauvignon Blanc, flavourful mature cheddar with Cabernet Sauvignon, and ripe blue-veined cheeses with Noble Late Harvests.

Jenda’s relaxed yet sophisticated atmosphere makes it the perfect spot to grab a tasty bite to eat before catching a show at one of Montecasino’s dazzling theatre venues. The tapas dishes are ideal for sharing and pair perfectly with the selection of wines available, including a number of auction wines. Chan notes that, since it is very much a tapas (or small-plate) concept, the restaurant lends itself to showcasing a wide variety of vintages.

Chan recommends ordering the crispy calamari partnered with a glass of De Grendel Sauvignon Blanc; the bacon and mushroom quesadillas with a glass of Paul Cluver Village Pinot Noir; or the seared Norwegian salmon with a glass of Warwick The First Lady Dry Rosé.

Jenda also offers a weekly tasting every Tuesday night, when a featured winery is invited to display its new vintages and latest releases. This special event includes at least five featured wines paired with dishes from the restaurant’s menu.
