Music of the night

The fabulous ’50s come to life at Gold Reef City’s Back o’ the Moon restaurant

Music of the night

Starry, starry night

Named after Sophiatown’s famous shebeen, Back o’ the Moon restaurant at Gold Reef City is a feast for the senses. Guests can enjoy a gourmet dining experience with an exquisite menu, impeccable service, as well as great live entertainment in a lavish, contemporary setting.

The main dining room glitters in gold, turquoise and purple, with plush furnishings that give the space a sense of warmth. The midnight sky is mirrored in the star-spangled carpet, while the chandeliers give off a cosy glow, spreading a little man-made moonlight around the room.

Instruments and pictures of musical legends adorn the walls in the comfortable Moon Light Lounge – the ideal spot for a laid-back drink. Take a seat in a roomy armchair and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere.

Heavenly feast

This unique restaurant offers gourmet dining, and there’s a range of delicious dishes to choose from that are sure to delight your palate.

Whet your appetite with a spicy starter, such as the shrimp cocktail served in a peppered Bloody Mary sauce, or the beef carpaccio with onion marmalade. If you are in the mood for a salad, The Famous Greek is a delectable mix of Mediterranean flavours.

Moving on to mains, you are spoiled for choice, with everything from curries to tempting meat and seafood dishes. The molasses steak is a house speciality: tender fillet with a mouth-watering, rich flavour.

If you find yourself torn between delights from the ocean, then try the seafood platter, with its selection of fishy favourites.

Whatever you choose to eat, be sure to leave room for one of the restaurant’s tasty desserts. Choose the platter for a combination of heavenly
sweet treats.

Aside from the extensive wine list, featuring all those exceptional wines that were acquired at the Nederburg and Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild auctions, the restaurant also has a great selection of cocktails to tickle your taste buds.

The cosy cognac and cigar bar provides the perfect full stop to a memorable evening. Sip on the subtle flavours of your warming drink and share a story or two, just like they did back in the day.
