Zepi Grill & Bar serves up wholesome food with a view in the heart of Cape Town

City slicker

Where it’s at

The trendy SunSquare Cape Town Gardens hotel is home to Zepi Grill & Bar, where diners can enjoy a variety of hearty meals in a spectacular setting.

If you’re visiting for dinner, be sure to arrive in time for sundowners out on the terrace, situated alongside the beautiful garden, complete with palm trees, sparkling swimming pool and views of the city skyline.

Watch the sun set as you quench your thirst with the signature Zepi Collins, a fruity mixture of gin, peach purée, bubbly and lemon juice; or the Bespoke Mojito. Besides colourful cocktails, there’s also a lunch menu (available from noon to 10 pm), featuring handmade pizzas, prego rolls and other yummy fare.

Inside, expect a rustic-chic feel with exposed brick, dark wood furnishings and warm pops of red and orange, all elegantly lit by the twinkling ceiling lights.

The interactive show kitchen creates a culinary buzz as you watch the chefs in action, preparing dish after delicious dish.

Decisions, decisions

Whether you’re a hotel guest or a Mother City local, you will need time to peruse the meal options, considering the great variety on offer.

Chef Peter John ‘PJ’ Lakay has specially developed an à la carte and a blackboard menu. Both focus on unpretentious comfort food, using seasonal, fresh ingredients and drawing inspiration from authentic SA flavours as well as international culinary influences.

For starters, try the pan-fried prawns coated in Asian-style paste and served with avo, red onion, rocket and sesame seeds; or mussels in white-wine sauce with freshly baked bread.

Moving on to the main course, the dry-aged rib-eye steak accompanied by hand-cut chips and roast vegetables is a sure winner for fans of red meat; while the pasta lovers at the table will simply adore the pulled-beef linguine, which is made with slow-cooked beef shin, Parmesan, rosemary and orange gremolata, served on a bed of home-made linguine.

Whatever savoury delights you decide on, be sure to leave ample room for dessert – the organic dark-chocolate fondant with marshmallow pillows and vanilla ice cream is heaven for those with a sweet tooth and will have you coming back time and again.
